Yesterday Billie Eilish released her new single titled "Wish You Were Gay". The song had previously circulated on the Internet, but this is the first time it was professionally recorded and officially released on music streaming platforms. Eilish also posted a video to YouTube explaining her creative process in writing the song, as well as its meaning. The song is about your typical unrequited love dilemma, a girl vying for attention from a guy who isn't interested in her (he doesn't answer her messages, and he shows up for dinner extremely late). However, there's a twist; Eilish speculates that perhaps the guy she is crushing on isn't interested because of his sexual orientation. "When someone doesn't love you, it makes you wonder why," Eilish says in the YouTube video. "Do I smell weird? Your mind goes to all these different places and, the thing is like, what's wrong with me? If only there was a reason. I wish you were gay to spare my pride, to give your lack of interest in me an explanation." Finneas O'Connell, Eilish's brother and producer, adds, "It's painful to love somebody who doesn't love you back." Lyrics in the song include: "Don't say I'm not your type, just say that I'm not your preferred sexual orientation." The brother-sister duo also want to make it clear that the song isn't meant to be offensive in any way. As it turns out, the guy Eilish wrote the song about actually came out to her as gay. Eilish's highly anticipated debut album 'When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' is set to be released on March 29. |
